Food For Monsters

When I started writing this story, it was a simple restaurant game, with a few key recurring characters. As it developed, it become a story about a small community in a world full of conflict between humans and monsters.

The protagonist, Daisy, is a human server at Le Monsieur Monstre. The game starts on the day of her friend Mr. Volkov’s birthday, and her main task is to prepare for his surprise birthday party. While seemingly simple, this involves inviting guests throughout the day and helping another friend regain his courage — all while still performing her usual tasks as a server at a restaurant. Daisy also must make decisions about her own future, by confronting memories from her past in a strangely realistic dream sequence. Most of the game is spent interacting with strange and entertaining customers, all with their own quirks, and the ending ties everything together.

Notable characters in the game include: Chef Blanc, Mr. Volkov, Mr. Rodrigues, Mr. Edmund Hughes, Edmund’s Robot, Dr. Marbles, Mouse (a cat), Ms. Gutling, Nym Elvaris, The Demolisher, Squid, Sahnaelle, Inky, Lord of Eternal Darkness, and the monster under Daisy’s bed.

Reflection

I loved most parts of the game-making process, except for the frustration when a certain scene didn’t work the way I wanted, or some variable broke some other event, or I had an idea that I didn’t know how to execute… I’m not that familiar with coding, so it was hard to adjust my thinking to computer logic. But, if I learned anything from this experience, it was how to create a working system. It was fun once I got the hang of it! My first scene is a little wonky because I still hadn’t figured out how to script certain tasks in the most efficient way, but as the game progressed I created scenes quicker and much more simply.

My favorite part of the process was designing the sets and writing the characters. I feel like the atmosphere of a game can change so much of the experience, so I put a lot of time into making worlds that looked nice to me and adding music that added a little ambiance. The story itself was also fun because it came out naturally as I went. I had a rough idea of what I wanted to do, but some of my characters were completely unplanned, and it was fun to see them grow. Also, the last thing I expected to include in this game is world lore, but I just went with it and now here we are.
